401(k) & IRA Strategies
You have the questions—together, we’ll help you find the right answers based on your financial picture and long-term goals.
- Should I roll over (ROLLOVER) my 401(k), 457, or 403(b), or is it better to leave it with my current plan?
- Am I receiving guidance on my retirement assets from my employer or plan administrator—and is it optimized to me individually?
- Which IRA is most appropriate for me: Traditional or Roth?
- Can I contribute to a spousal IRA even if my spouse is no longer working?
- How can I structure IRA withdrawals to help manage both immediate and long-term tax implications?
- What impact could IRA withdrawals have on my healthcare costs, including Medicare premiums?
- How might IRA distributions affect the taxation of my Social Security benefits?
- What pre-retirement strategies should I consider with my 401(k) and IRA in the 3–5 years leading up to retirement?
Please keep in mind that rolling over your qualified employer sponsored retirement plan (QRP) assets to an IRA is just one option. You generally have four options for your QRP distribution:
-
Roll over your assets into an Individual Retirement Account (IRA)
-
Leave assets in your former QRP, if plan allows
-
Move assets to your new/existing QRP, if plan allows
-
Take a lump-sum distribution and pay the associated taxes
Each of these options has advantages and disadvantages and the one that is best depends on your individual circumstances.
